The competition was scheduled to start on Saturday, but officials from the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club ruled the tournament could not commence with the wind warning place.
Despite the set back, a field of 37 entrants fished enthusiastically with catches and releases of both tuna and sharks.
Congratulations to Trevor Chippendale in Seahog Captained by Geoff McMahon landing a 63kg yellowfin tuna.
Entrants also congratulated Wagga Wagga visitor Lee Donavan after he landed a whopping 96.5kg bronze whaler shark. Full details from the competition are on the club's website at www.mbglac.com.au.
Heavy rain last week certainly put a dampener on local fishing with the lakes and rivers again muddy.
For those that ventured out ocean flathead were reported off Tura Headland and Kianinny.
Try at 20 fathoms also off Bournda Island. Morwong and snapper are reported from White Rock out of Kianinny, and also Lennards Island, North Head and Boyds Tower down to Mowarry.
Some very large snapper are reported from Haycock and Long Point. Given that our local Sapphire Coast species are generally smaller than those from southern Australia it looks like we have some welcome visitors from Victoria.
Australian salmon remain on the chew in the Pambula River and some great catches together with tailor, reported from trolling, spinning and both hard and soft plastics. Salmon are also active off Tura, Main, Haycock and Aslings beaches.
In the estuaries near the entrances where the run in tides are bringing cleaner water some lovely trevally and tailor have been sighted. Further up the estuaries bream, tailor, trevally and dusky flathead have been quiet as the water remains fairly cool and muddy.
