The bright yellow playing gear was originally a concept to “stand out from the pack”, but quickly became a way of paying tribute to the hard-working local fireys.
Club stalwart Matt Inskip was researching jersey ideas and looking at what some other Groups had done when he came across a jumper dedicated to the rural fire service.
“And what had been a chance for us to stand out, quickly turned into a serious reflection on what has happened in the Bega Valley Shire this year,” Mr Inskip said.
“We thought we actually have an opportunity here to give our thanks and appreciation to the rural fire service by wearing these jerseys in their honour.”
Mr Inskip said the community response had been overwhelming and the club did not expect such a strong reaction.
“Since the girls’ first game in the jumpers, the response has been massive,” he said. “We have decided to donate all money raised by these jerseys to not just our local Candelo and Bemboka RFS, but to the head office of the RFS so all local branches can benefit.”
Many supporters have been itching to get a hold of the limited jerseys, so the club has a number for sale for $80, contact the club via their Facebook page, or email candelobemboka@homtail.com.
“We want to thank everyone for supporting this with special mention to Group 16, CLH Communications, Candelo Bowling Club, Bemboka Hotel, Carinya Park Contracting and Grants Flooring,” he said.
