Over the Easter weekend local launching ramps were chock-a-block and anglers were rewarded with excellent fishing conditions. The full moon brought some good gummy shark catches beside the reefs and the beaches. Good salmon and tailor have been landed off Tura Beach, Middle Beach, Haycock and Aslings beaches.
Off the more northern reefs there has been a battle between anglers and chinamen leatherjackets and clouds of juvenile couta. Further to the south Lennards Island, North Head and Mowarry are providing some good snapper and morwong and there are reports of kingfish, although patchy, at Mowarry.
Ocean flathead remain on the chew at Tura Headland and off the Horseshoe Reef, try 25 fathoms for the big ones! Try also off Bournda, Turingal Head, White Rock and NE off Baronda Head at 13-15 fathoms.
Early morning anglers at the Merimbula Fishing Platform are landing some luderick although it is close to the end of the season for them. New lights at the wharf are a great calamari attractor and good Calamari squid continue to be landed. Rat Kingfish are about – great fun for the angler, but must be released.
Meanwhile, the next prawn run will be in April.
Large tailor are on the chew providing anglers excellent sport in Merimbula Top Lake, all you need is a silver spinner.
There are also lots of very large blue swimmer crabs – just make sure you use legal traps as nets are banned in the lake.
Trevally are thick downstream past the bridge, try soft plastics. The estuaries continue to fish well with tailor, mullet, trevally, lovely blue lipped bream and lots of breeding snapper all on the chew.
Try Pambula Broadwater for dusky flathead but remember the large ones are breeders and it is not legal to take more than one over 70cm. Catch and release is the name of the game.
