For minor surgery such as cataract procedures, patients have to travel to either Canberra or Mogo. This requires possible overnight accommodation and lengthy travel. Many of these procedures were done in Bega in a relatively short time with minimal impact on those receiving treatment. The alternative to this travel is to wait for up to 12 months at Bega hospital.
Surely arrangements could be made to utilise facilities at SERH, where it is rumoured that all operating theatres aren't being utilised to their full capacity. It is up to state and federal politicians to make arrangements to accommodate this need.
Accommodation for family and carers at Canberra Hospital is of utmost importance. Patients are often in a critical condition and family have to make hurried arrangements. In many cases accommodation is required for weeks and months placing a considerable financial burden on these people. This is even more significant if motel accommodation is the only option available. Long stay accommodation is also required for patients requiring radiation treatment.
Local residents desire a better deal than this. I urge representatives of the NSW, ACT and federal governments to make this a number one priority to meet the needs of people in this community

Charity golf day thanks
Bega Hospital Auxiliary's annual charity golf day was held recently at Bega Country Club. The auxiliary would like to thank the golfers who played and support the auxiliary every year, and the sponsors who are called upon every year. Our thanks go to LJ Hooker, Elders, Tarra Motors, Coles, Woolworths, Auto Pro, Fine Line Boutique, Mitre 10, Ritchies News Agency, Discount Chemist, Tuff as Workwear, Mals Pizza, Southern Farm Supplies, Horizon Bank, Barbeques Galore, Office Choice, Repco and the Rose Family. The Auxiliary is grateful to each and every one.
Thanks also go to Bega News, ABC and 2EC for advertising our special day. The auxiliary is also very grateful to Club Bega and the Country Club for without their support the day would not be possible.
A very special thanks has to go to Simon Owens who organises the competition and helps in so many other ways. We were delighted when Simon's team, consisting of Simon, Nikki Smith, Jason Edmunds and Andrew Dick took out the first prize with the runners up being Luke Donnelly, Ben Hanscombe, Andrew Donnelly and Kim Rood.
The day was a financial success and the money raised goes directly to our local hospital for much needed equipment.
