Most game fishing activity remained subdued during the recent wet and windy weather. These conditions do favour whale watching as the whales are much more active when the sea is noisy. Whales continue southwards and some spectacular sightings are reported.
October is the month when ocean flathead come back onto the chew. Try off the normal spots from Bithrys, Kianniny, Bournda Island and Tura Headland. Best results from about 18 fathoms. Snapper and morwong are also returning to the bite with some good fish reported from off Haycock and near Boyds Tower and Mowarry. Best bait pilchards as well as soft plastics and micro jigs. Closer to Merimbula, gummy shark are about. Congratulations to Les Tudberry for his lovely gummy taken on the inshore side of the Horseshoe Reef near Haycock.
At Merimbula boaters need to be extra cautious as the entrance continues to change due to shifting sand bars and spits.
Red worm soft plastics at the Club's Spencer Park jetty will see good returns of trevally. Tailor grace the main Merimbula Top Lake, troll with silver spinners. There are salmon out on our beaches and headlands. Great places to fish during SW winds. Best spots Tura, Main, Haycock and Aslings beaches. Pilchards and ganged hooks seem to bring the best returns.
Soft plastics are a must for good results in both Merimbula and Pambula estuaries, lots of burley will certainly help. Available are good trevally, occasional salmon and bream. In the Broadwater at Pambula and the Top Lake at Merimbula water temperatures are rising and we are now getting some response from Dusky Flathead. Best to try Mogareeka for dusky flathead and salmon as the Bega River remains fairly dirty after the recent rains.
The club room will not be open on Friday with members on their annual trip to Wonboyn Lake for the Mex Williams Memorial Competition.
