Captaining his own boat over the weekend, the club congratulates Ross on his 50-plus-kilogram tuna that he reeled in about 50 kilometres off the coast of Eden.
No other yellowfin were reported although there were some patches of albacore in the same area.
Despite some superb weather over the long weekend, club members were reporting a bit of disappointment with their returns. Water temperatures near shore were cool at just under 15 degrees, which the club said was a degree drop from the previous week. Members reported a lot of fish were not feeding well due to the temperature drop.
However, members said the full moon over the weekend could have also had an impact as the old adage goes to "not fish the full moon or the full dark".
Outside of the big game efforts offshore, some anglers still had some luck. Ocean flathead were certainly on the chew off Tura Headland but in the deeper waters at 22 fathoms. Snapper seemed quiet with few reports available. Some good gummy shark were taken off Haycock Beach and all else fairly quiet.
We repeat the advice to take care exiting the Merimbula Lake as the channel has moved significantly westwards and many boats are hitting shallows where there was once the main channel. Aim for the western side of the MBGLAC fish cleaning pontoon as your turning mark.
Schools of slimy mackerel bait fish underlain by cuta at the artificial reefs are available but as noted above cannot always be relied to be on the chew.
Over the weekend some lovely calamari squid have been taken at the Merimbula Fishing platform. Best time late afternoon and early morning. Try a number three slow sinking jig.
In the estuaries the cooler waters have slowed activity. In the Merimbula Top Lake tailor plus a few bream and trevally remain on the bite. One positive is Australian salmon which do feed in the estuaries during the full moon. In the lower reaches of the Pambula River trolling with green coloured spinners is bringing good results. Good salmon are also in the channels at Mogareeka.
The Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club commenced its fishing year on June 1st where anglers earn championship points based on species length photographed on DPI brag mats. MBGLAC membership applications, renewal and everything you need to know about local fishing is on the club's website at www.mbglac.com.au.
