Club members congratulated captain Peter Haar on their success on the water, and said anglers further south could expect to see some wonderful game fishing soon.
Marlin are moving ever further south together with the warmer currents associated with the East Australian Current and the club has started its March Marlin Challenge.
With the Eden Amateur Fishing Club's annual competition now well under way, good catches of local fish abound testifying to the excellent fishing grounds about our coast.
Of note from the first weekend is a huge 29.9kg gummy shark, a 2.5kg drummer and a 3.92kg snapper, all great catches.
Good snapper and morwong remain on the chew. Near Merimbula try the north end of Horseshoe reef at 17 fathoms. Best results at dawn and dusk, from anchoring with a deep slung berley pot.
There is no shortage of slimy mackerel so bait is not an issue. Trevally and gummy shark are also likely targets.
Australian salmon remain active at Tura Beach, Middle Beach, Haycock and Aslings beaches as well as the headlands and Merimbula Wharf.
Ocean flathead are also on the chew generally best off Tura Headland and Quondolo, try drifting at 12-15 fathoms.
All along the Merimbula channel down from the bridge, tailor, trevally, dusky flathead, the occasional flounder, whiting and bream remain on the chew.
Best time is low tide with both soft plastics, nippers or pilchard baits. In Merimbula Lake tailor are ever present as well as dusky flathead, bream and trevally.
At the Merimbula Wharf luderick can be patchy but some good catches together with drummer are reported in the mornings and evenings using cabbage weed and artificial lures.
Lots of activity from spinning silver lures for Australian salmon and a few tailor. Anybody wanting lots of tailor activity try a silver spinner above the Merimbula bridge.
On Friday, March 13, the club will be open from 6.30pm. Visitors are welcome, come one and all and enjoy the ambience, fishing report, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices.
