A break in the strong winds has seen keen anglers out at our local reefs, Long Point and Haycock, rewarded with lovely catches of good size snapper and morwong. Best results dawn and dusk. Gummys from 13kg to 15kg are reported to have been taken from both Horseshoe Reef and Long Point Reef areas. As well, good flathead are reporting from off Tura Beach Headland.

With this year's whale season now under way we have reports of a pod of southern minke whales cavorting off Long Point. Minke whales are not as plentiful as humpback whales, and given that these are the most widely hunted species in our oceans such sightings are most notable.
Chinamen leatherjackets are making it difficult on our flathead grounds, particularly to the north past white rock. Move south and try Tura Headland.
Australian salmon and good tailor are available off our beaches, best near the top of the run-in tide early morning and evening. Try triple gang hooked pilchards as bait or if you want to cast, 50gm blue coloured metal lures. Salmon and tailor are also in the Pambula River and Broadwater. Trolled silver lures are working well.
Large schools of luderick remain in the lower channel up to the bridge at Merimbula. Try from the marina with stringy week or artificial lures. Nippers and worms are also great baits for luderick.
From Father's Day on Sunday, September 1, the zero bag limit for Australian bass and estuary perch ceases in rivers below freshwater impoundments and these fish may be legally retained (two per day). For example the Bega River. Within fresh water impoundments such as Brogo Dam the zero bag limit does not apply. The Department of Fisheries has released a large number of trout from its hatchery into Lake Eucumbene at Buckenderra, Braemar and Old Adaminaby. Some reported as big as 5kg! Hopefully these will maintain the wonderful fishery at Eucumbene.
Last Friday evening the club presented Ron Vanderdrift with Life Membership. As well as more than 30 years' club membership, Ron has been a wonderful sponsor for the club and his generosity is sincerely regarded. For the award, the Club was fortunate that all its local Life Members; Robert Wood, John McKay and Shane Mayberry were able to be present in support. Ron tells us that his Tackle World store which was destroyed by fire is looking forward to re-opening in the new year.
On Friday, August 30, the club will be open from 6.30pm and all are welcome. A great way to warm up during these cold winter evenings is to come to the club's Weber night Friday 6.30 for 7pm and enjoy succulent beef and lamb off the Weber!
