Bega District News and Australian Community Media launched the initiative last month with the donation of a Volkswagen Transporter worth $45,000 by Tarra Motors.
On Wednesday local plumber Brad McBain volunteered his services to install fittings in the van ready to accommodate a washing machine. Both the washing machine and a dryer have been donated by Betta Home Living Bega.
Brad and Joel Tamatea worked out the best way to install the fittings into the framework of the van without damaging the external panels. It will allow the machines to be hooked up to water, power and drainage wherever it pulls up to service our community.
What will eventually become a fully contained laundrette will be made available for free to the region's homeless and those doing it tough.
The van will also have counselling support workers on hand so there is someone to talk to while you wait for your load to finish.
The plan is to have the van travelling on a schedule from Narooma to Eden, parking at locations deemed appropriate for the privacy of clients.
Keep an eye on the BDN for updates as the van conversion progresses.
