With the backing of numerous local businesses and support services, we're preparing to kit out a mobile laundry for our region's homeless and others doing it tough.
Tarra Motors has donated a Volkswagen Transporter worth $45,000 for us to convert. Betta Home Living also jumped at the chance to support the project with a washing machine and dryer.
With the assistance of various wonderful local tradespeople, the van is going to be a fully contained laundrette made available for free to the region's homeless.
The van will also have counselling support workers on hand so there is someone to talk to while you wait for your load to finish.
The plan is to have the van travelling on a schedule from Narooma to Eden, parking at locations deemed appropriate for the privacy of clients.
Australian Community Media editor Ben Smyth and sales manager Tim Shinnick are very enthusiastic about the project and hopeful it can bring some relief and support for those in our community doing it tough.
The project to fit out the van begins in earnest next week and we plan to bring you regular updates and photos as it progresses.
