Speaking at about 6.50pm on Saturday, September 7, RFS community liaison officer Marty Webster said the fire was now contained after starting about an hour earlier and burning a hectare of land.
Mr Webester said that in the high winds all services were working closely.
He said the fire was in the vicinity of power lines.
There are currently 1066 homes without power stretching from Eden through to Pambula Beach and Merimbula after the power went off at 4.49pm.
The TV transmitter for all free to air stations at Bimmill Hill is also down affecting ABC and SBS in a wider area and all free to air stations for anyone who tunes into Bimmill Hill for reception.
A spokeswoman for Essential Energy said crews were working as quickly as safety would allow to restore power. The company has estimated that power would be restored by 8pm tonight.
The fire was close to the Roy Wotton Gardens nursing home but Mr Webster said there was a good fire break between the fire and the nursing home and so evacuations had not been necessary.
