While the past few years saw the traditional breakfast in Littleton Gardens switch to a lunchtime event in and around the new civic centre, 2019 sees a return to the earlier time slot.
As well as a citizenship ceremony, there will be family fun in Littleton Gardens, market stalls and entertainment from 7.30am. The official ceremony will start at 9am.
Bega Valley Shire’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2019 is former NRL star and founder of the Future Direction Network Corey Payne.
Merimbula Rotary
The Rotary Club of Merimbula is providing a free Big Aussie Breakfast from 7.30am to 8.30am – although a gold coin donation is appreciated! Any money raised will go towards the Rotary Club's many community projects.
Merimbula’s official Australia Day ceremony runs from 8-9.30am, followed by music until 10am.
Cobargo Celebrates
Cobargo’s CWA are hosting a celebration of, and for, the community from 10am. The local Scouts will be cooking up a free sausage sizzle (gold coin donation appreciated) ahead of the official proceedings from 11ish.
Australia Day Ambassador Corey Payne will be attending, and presentations will also be made by local school captains.
The Cobargo Citizen of the Year – a closely-guarded secret until the day – will be revealed.
“It’s our way of saying thank you to the community and the community’s way of saying thanks to the person awarded,” Mary Williams from the Cobargo CWA branch said.
The Great Australia Day Float
Grab your giant flamingo or inflatable mattress for the traditional Australia Day float on Merimbula Lake. Every year for as long as anyone can remember, large numbers of people leap in to the lake from Merimbula Bridge with their floating craft of choice. Timed to catch the outgoing tide, merrymakers enjoy a leisurely sojourn along the channel to Spencer Park.
Eden Sing-along
From 11am there is an Australia Day flag raising ceremony at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
ESSCI will man the BBQ with a sausage sizzle and Eden Singers will lead with some Aussie songs – but joining in is encouraged. Bring a chair or a rug. Tea, coffee and cool drinks available
Tathra Fishing
In Tathra Australia Day is all about getting on the water and trying to land a big one.
Tathra Amateur Fishing Club hosts the annual competition, with $1300 in prize money up for grabs this year. Juniors most welcome.
Change the Date?
Should we move Australia Day? Call it something else? Keep it as is?
It’s a debate that has been gaining increasing traction in recent years with a vocal opposition. However, recent polls also suggest a vast majority of Australians want it to remain as is.
A day that should be for all Australians presently is not, and it can only be for all Australians if something changes – but should that change be the date we mark it, if we mark it at all?
Tathra Carnival and bushfire appeal donation
The annual Tathra Family Fun Carnival is running until January 27 on the beachfront reserve next to the skate park.
Dodgem cars, jumping castles, kids rides and family fun games along with a food van. The water slide is open from 11am until 4pm and the rest of the carnival from 6-10pm.
On Australia Day, all proceeds raised will be donated to the Tathra and District Mayoral Bushfire Appeal.
