On Thursday, December 6, most of the 90-odd volunteers who complement the care and treatment of patients across the SERH and Pambula Hospital enjoyed a happy gathering on the hospital’s ground floor, with a cuppa, cake and much chatter.
There were also Christmas presents for everyone thanks to Woolworths Bega, Merimbula and Tura Beach.
Acknowledged at the event were the various groups of volunteers including the Bega, Tathra and Pambula Hospital Auxiliaries, the “Golden Girls” (dementia and special needs support) and “Pink Ladies” (social and emotional interaction), pastoral carers, and volunteers in the various departments of oncology, renal, physio, mental health, emergency and the new sub-acute rehab unit.

There were also members of the Bega Knitters, who kindly donate blankets for the mental health inpatient unit, toys for the emergency department, beanies for oncology and baby clothes and blankets for families in need.
“The work of SERH volunteers is deeply appreciated and valued by staff, patients, clients and their families,” volunteers coordinator Jenny Francis said.
“Our combined hospital auxiliaries have raised $58,499 for the 2017/18 financial year!”
Cutting the celebratory Christmas cake was Beryl Harris, who has volunteered at the hospital for around 34 years. “There’s not a part of the hospital I haven’t volunteered in,” she said.
“It’s an indescribable feeling being a volunteer. I love people, I still have reasonably good health, and it’s such a joy to help someone less fortunate.
“To give them some joy, some love, I go home ecstatic every day.”
