It's understood a member of the public had attended the Bega Police Station on Monday, October 29, with an unknown item. They had been concerned as to what it could be.
The same person then also attended Merimbula station.
By 4.30pm both police stations had been cordoned off with police tape and multiple Fire and Rescue NSW vehicles were in attendance.
The operation still appeared to be ongoing at 8pm with members of the public reporting "contamination” tape and fire engines at both Bega and Merimbula.
A Police NSW spokesman said there was no immediate cause for alarm. Officers were making the sites secure and were being assisted by FRNSW and its Hazmat units.
"They are going through the checks and protocols at each station to make sure everyone is safe, and our friends in Fire and Rescue and helping out,” the spokesman said.
There are no reports of any injuries.
