The Bega High School principal has released a statement about the “serious assault” that recently occurred at the school.
In an attack that was filmed and uploaded to social media on Tuesday, June 19, a student can be seen throwing her victim into a brick wall before punching and kicking her as she lies curled up on the ground.
A letter published to the school’s Facebook page on Friday afternoon signed by principal Linda Thurston states staff responded immediately to the incident and the school was assisting police with their investigations.
“Students involved in the attack (including those involved in filming and distributing the footage) are being dealt with fully under the school’s disciplinary code/policy,” it states.
“In moving forward from this incident I request the support and consideration of students, staff and the entire school community to think and talk about the values that are important to us and ways we can all ensure the safety and wellbeing of others at school.
“Most importantly we need to support our friends and peers if there are issues at school including encouraging people to advise a trusted teacher, follow school rules designed to respect individual privacy and keep students safe, and to show kindness, compassion and respect to all.”
She said the school had a “zero tolerance policy towards violence, bullying and other anti-social behaviours” and was supporting the victim of the assault.
Students at the school had planned to hold a rally to speak out against bullying and harassment on Friday morning.
Instead the school convened an assembly which was addressed by student leaders and staff.
