Judith is one of 36 Year 11 students from across the Illawarra and South East region to receive a Victor Chang School Science Award.
The science wizz is enrolled in chemistry, physics and biology classes at school, and was nominated by her teachers for her tenacity and commitment in the classroom.
Judith, who lives in Tanja, said she has always had a fascination with science and knows there are lots of job options in the industry.
“I find science interesting because I like to understand how things work, which is what it is all about,” she said.
Her favorite science subject is biology. She hopes to become a vet one day.
“I loved watching nature documentaries as a kid, plus my mum is a vet,” she said.
“We’ve always had animals, a dog, cat, goats sheep and chooks, I like looking after them.”
Judith’s other passion is music and she has a love of singing and the guitar. She made a connection between the two creative fields of science and music.
“I went to a physics camp in July, and there were so many intelligent kids there to do science, but so many of them were really talented musicians as well,” she said.
“I think they seem different, but they both take a lot of creativity.”
After completing high school, Judith hopes to continue studying science at the University of Melbourne or Sydney University.
The Victor Chang School Science Awards were held on Thursday, November 16, and are named after the late cardiac surgeon and pioneer of the modern heart transplantation.
At a time when enrolments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects are at their lowest levels in over two decades, the award celebrates young, gifted students and fosters growth in scientific studies.
The award winners will join more than 200 students from across NSW on a tour of the Victor Chang Institute and have the opportunity to learn firsthand from our world-renowned scientists.
