The High Heelers had the tough task of facing the Sharkettes who were at the top of the leader board. With the Sharkettes being the only team the High Heelers have lost to this year they had something to prove in front of their home crowd. The game was tightly contested for the first 10 minutes with early pressure on the Heelers forcing them to defend their own line. Credit to their defence they worked out of their own half and eventually gained good filed possession where Patrice Clear would run the ball wide to score. With the conversion attempt waved away the Heelers led 4-0. Just before half time the Heelers would strike again, this time it was the combination of Monique Perkins with Tash Stewart who would eventually find Sam Stewart unmarked out wide, Sam crossed over for the next 4 pointer. At 8-0 the Heelers were again put under pressure close to their line and the Sharkette’s would take a quick dart from dummy half reaching the ball over the try line before the Heelers could rip the tag free from their shorts. With the conversion successful the Heelers would take to the sheds with a narrow 8-6 lead at half time. After half time the Heelers looked determined to finish the game on a high. Tash Stewart would claim next points just 3 minutes into the second half, striding away from defenders. Lucy Sellers was again instrumental in defence making fantastic tags and showing great kicking skills. Kristy Nichols also had a great defensive game and provided the team with great communication in the middle. Tight defence meant the Sharkettes could not penetrate the Heelers line again and it was Patrice Clear who again would duck and weave through defenders for last points taking the final score to 16-6. A very positive finish for the High Heelers, knocking off the top of the table team, as the road towards finals gets shorter. Reserve Grade:
The Bombala Reserve grade team had a very promising game against Moruya. The club was excited to welcome another new Fijian recruit Aborosio Navori to the club, ‘Boro’ played a fantastic game at fullback proving to be a solid asset in both attack and defence. Whilst at half time the Heelers trailed 8-14, the Bombala lads still had plenty of wind left in their sails. Tom Eccels and Leigh Radford were the try scorers in the first half, both showing great strength to push through defenders. Andrew Platts played a very solid game both in defence and attack carting the ball up for the Heelers. Korie Elton displayed great leadership out on the paddock, leading by example, taking tough hit ups and putting in a crucial kicking game. While Moruya scored first in the second half to extend their lead to 8-20, it was the Heelers who would hang in there -scoring again through Tom Eccels closing the gap to 14-20. Only moments later Daniel Douch would show great skill and pace to evade defenders to bag his own 4 pointer as Bombala would edge closer at 18-20. Bombala would get good field possession and have great opportunity over the next 10 minutes but unfortunately were unable to turn this into points. Moruya would eventually get the ball back up their end and were able to bag another 4 points taking their lead back to a converted try. The never say die attitude from the Heelers was admirable and sure enough their perseverance would see them score with only 6 minutes left on the clock through Andrew Rutherford. Korie Elton was able to add the extra 2 and we were locked up again at 24-24. The last few minutes of footy were entertaining with both sides fighting it out for the winning points, however the clock ended up winning and the final score would remain a draw at 24 all. Player’s player and 3 points went to Andrew Platts, 2 points went to Boro Navori and 1 point went to Leigh Hodak.
First Grade:
Determined to turn things around from last week’s loss, Joe Bobbin and his first graders certainly proved a point – they are still very hot contenders for the first grade comp. The Bombala lads dominated the Moruya pack right from the get go, showcasing fantastic skill and fitness both in attack and defence. Great hard-hitting play from the likes of Wame Belolevu, Luke Ingram and Adam Rodwell provided great go forward up the middle for the Heelers. The fantastic control of the ruck from Paul Perkins and Blake Robinson meant that skilful Tyler Jones could weave his magic, often linking up with speedsters Bailey Jones, Alex Rosten and Zac Slater out wide, Rosten and Slater would both end up scoring hat tricks by the end of the day. The score at half time was 28-4 in the Heelers favour. Joe Bobbin made some fantastic barnstorming runs gaining great yards and providing try assists, as would Wame Belolevu. Sami Buismasi and Jackson Standen made great impact coming off the bench, able to cut attackers in half in defence and always able to brush 2 or 3 defenders in attack. Malcolm Stone proved as reliable as ever for the Heelers and the return of Brett Hodak provided great confidence out on the paddock. The Heelers would take the win from the reigning premiers convincingly at 46-10. The Bombala Club will get a break this weekend as the group 16 dedicate it to the wet-weather make up round. The 3 grades will be busy preparing for their next big hit out at home which will be the following weekend on Saturday, July 8 in their Annual Heritage Round and all-round highlander grudge match with the Cooma Stallions club. It will be another top of the table clash for the first graders where they will seek to redeem themselves from their close loss up in Cooma earlier in the season; the first grade Stallions are currently undefeated this year. The club encourages as many supporters and past players as possible to come along to support the Heelers. The club will be celebrating in particular the culmination of the Delegate Tigers to help form the Bombala & District Football Club. First grade will be donning special Heritage designed jerseys in celebration of this part of the club’s history. The club then invites everyone back to the Bombala RSL Club where presentations will be held as well as the auctioning of the First Grade jerseys, followed by music entertainment.
