Tathra Public School has welcomed two new teachers this term, both of whom were disappointed the Gonski school funding reforms would not continue to their final year.
In December last year, the federal government announced it would not fund the final two years of the Gonski funding reforms in a move estimated to leave the nation's schools $4billion poorer.
The school’s new K1 teacher Megan Bobbin said this decision was a bit disappointing, as extra funding for schools makes a huge difference for children in literacy and numeracy, a sentiment echoed by new Year 1-2 teacher Kellie Umback.
“It’s very disappointing, considering how much we rely on that funding to support our students,” Ms Umback said.
She grew up in Tathra and moved back to the area after spending 10 years teaching in Finley, Western Riverina.
“I wanted to come home,” she said.
“I love the values the school has.
“I’ve got young children and I’m looking forward to having the kids here at the school because of the enthusiastic staff.”
Ms Bobbin moved to the seaside school for a change of scenery after spending eight years at Bega Valley Public School.
Her son is in Kindergarten at Tathra Public, but she does not teach him as he is in a different class.
Ms Bobbin also said she was looking forward to working with the “new, enthusiastic staff” at Tathra Public.
