He shot 116 out of a possible 120 and his score included seven bullseyes.
Organisers said the winds were not easily detectable, but were shifting and caught a few of eight-strong field off guard.
A calmer afternoon saw higher scores in the second round.
In the full bore standings, Robert L was on the mark, scoring 95/5 on the day.
Alan B shot 72/1.
The standard F class, for rifles with telescopic sights and bipods saw close reulsts.
Warwick S finished second to Russell with his 110/3.
David D was third on 107/2, fourth was Bob M 104, fifth was Craig S 102 and Scott B was sixth with 97/2.
Saturday’s shoot is a 600 yard championship prone event and will run from 12.30pm at Tarraganda.
Any centrefire 8mm or under capable of holding accuracy at distance will do!
