The unseen sides of cricket in both Wodonga and Newcastle, as well as the pathways to the top jobs off the field for women, earned journalists from the Newcastle Herald, Parkes Champion Post and Border Mail berths in this year's Sport Australia Media awards.
Herald investigative journalist Donna Page's work examining the Newcastle City and Suburban Cricket Association was named a finalist for best coverage of a community sport issue - rural and regional media.
Kristy Williams earned a nod in the same category for her piece on Young Matildas coach Leah Blayney, Parkes Cobras' Kempson and the path to shattering the glass ceiling in coaching ranks.
Steve Tervet's tales from inside Wodonga's storied cricket club will also vie for the honour.
The awards are the only dedicated sports media awards in the country. Acting chief executive Rob Dalton said the calibre of entries had been high.
"Australian sports media play an important role in sharing inspiring, insightful and sometimes heartbreaking sport stories," he said.
"It has been another challenging year for all and so we are proud to provide this opportunity to thank and highlight the world-class coverage and incredible depth of talent within our sports media industry."
The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Sydney on March 2, pending COVID-19 restrictions.
