According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) spring rainfall was 57 per cent above average for the country as a whole.

In NSW, BOM said it was the fourth-wettest spring since the first national records were made in 1900.

Meanwhile, the Bega Valley Shire's total rainfall for spring was around 100mm higher than average, having recorded 244.8mm in three months.

It was also colder than average along the NSW coastline, with the mean spring minimum temperature recorded as 0.17 degrees.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology the Bega Valley's lowest temperature recorded for spring, was 0.1 degrees on September 7.

Overall, the first two months of spring both recorded 65-66mm of rain.

According to weatherzone, rainfall figures were higher than usual in September, with the total rain recorded at 66.4mm when the long term average was 32.8 mm.

Rainfall in October however, was only 14.6mm higher than the long-term average of 50.4mm.

November then showed a similar spike in rainfall to September, bringing a total of 113.4mm, when the long term average was 67.2mm.

A seasonal climate summary for NSW by BOM noted spring's weather patterns were influenced by a developing La Nina and an ongoing negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event.

Spring rain increased risks of flooding in December

Heavy rains on December 9 were a perfect example of the increased risk of flash flooding as a result of increased rainfall in November.

The already waterlogged landscape was unable to cope with the additional rain storms of last week, with downpours creating widespread flooding and road closures on the night of December 9 and throughout Friday, December 10.

In the Bega Valley Shire, the Bega River peaked at 5.80m around 10.30am on Friday December 10, just shy of the 'moderate flooding' levels.

While in Mogo, business owners watched floodwaters rip through the town, damaging numerous shops along the Princes Highway.

Rescues were made by the SES across the district, with one death reported at Tuross Road in the Snowy-Monaro region in the early hours of Friday, December 10.
