So it was with no small surprise and joy that one was filmed wandering along the roadside near Wapengo, on the Tathra-Bermagui Rd, last week.
Mirri Raya Dalziel captured the koala cheekily strolling along the roadside near the Wapengo Rd turnoff on Friday, November 26, before it headed up the bank and climbed into a nearby tree.
The footage was shared with the Far South Coast Koala Action Network Facebook group by her mum Carrie.
"There's nothing cooler than that," one of the car's passengers is heard saying in the video.
Carrie told the BDN it was great to be able to increase exposure of the "vulnerable" species, but that perhaps road signage in the region was needed as the coast prepares for an influx of tourists over summer.
The video comes just two months after a juvenile koala was spotted in the Murrah region, possibly looking to settle into a home range local enthusiast Robert Bertram said.
Mr Bertram has been surveying and looking to protect koalas in the Murrah and surrounding forested areas for many years, and has also helped deliver drinking stations and motion capture cameras as part of his "citizen science" efforts.
