Despite a turbulent start to 2021 for the Bega Valley with COVID, Gauld has proven once again that with belief, perseverance and work, goals can be attained.
At the Sydney All-styles Karate Championship, held on February 27, Gauld attained gold by placing first in Veterans Kumite (fighting), and secured silver in Veterans Kata (forms), retaining her title as the first Bega Valley state karate champion.
Gauld said the competitor standard was very high in Kata.
Following a recent visit and rigorous training sessions with Kaicho Peter Jackson, 6th dan black belt and head of organisation, and Shihan Robert Graham, 5th dan black belt and NSW head of style, Gauld benefited greatly from honing her considerable skills and took out gold in Veterans Kata at the NSW state titles, held in Liverpool on March 13.
She also won gold in Veterans Kumite.
Gauld extended a huge thank you to Kaicho Peter Jackson and Shihan Robert Graham for the mentorship and support. She also thanked Sedoin Haley Graham, second dan black belt, also an AKF champion, for being a formidable training partner in the lead up to this success.
Training with the NSW AKF involves travelling every two weeks to train in Sydney and bringing this knowledge back to share with her colleagues in the Bega Valley.
As a result of Gauld's track record, wins and dedication, she has been selected for the NSW AKF team.
Gauld is proud of, and enjoys, being a role model for karate practitioners and students from regional NSW and reported there were some younger spectators that are now enthusiastic to compete in tournaments.
