1. Furniture layout and placement
When a room is empty it can be overwhelming to know where to place furniture, however you need to ensure you focus on creating a setting that flows and connects with the space.
Try and scale your furniture to fit the room and keep it in proportion. If you place the furniture correctly you are 90 per cent there.
2. Pendant lights hung too close to the ceiling
Nothing stands out more than a pendant light that has been hung to high and close to the ceiling. Don't be afraid to lower your lighting, using the top of your doorways as a height guide.
3. Poorly hung artwork and mirrors
Art and mirrors are the heart and soul of a home and it's imperative to have them in the correct location, scale and at the right height. Try and showcase them so they provide the wow factor to the room, and don't hang them too high - you don't want to be looking up at them.
It's also important to get the scale of the piece correct for the space. Look around the room and understand what else is going in the space when considering art and mirrors.
4. Rug choices
There are two most common mistakes with rugs; firstly, there isn't a rug used in the room and secondly if there is a rug, it is too small.
Don't be afraid to use a rug; it adds interest, depth and texture to a room - just make sure it is the right size. There is nothing worse than a small rug in a big room; a larger rug will make your room feel bigger.
5. Dark and gloomy.
Nobody likes to walk into a dark room - if you have a dark space, give it some light attention.
There are so many ways to lighten up a space: paint the room a lighter colour, lighten the window dressings, or add some lamps for soft light.
6. No life.
It is really noticeable when you walk into a space and there is nothing living in it - and by that we mean greenery and flowers.
Add plants to a room, small or large it doesnt matter, every room needs life. If you dont want a plant buy some flowers, they will boost your inner spirit.
