A contract has been awarded to Zauner Constructions, a construction company servicing regional NSW, and work has already begun at the Main St site.
Zauner's construction manager Matthew Green said the community could expect to see construction sheds going in this week followed by excavation of the basement car park footings and inground services
"We are excited about kicking off the project in our own backyard," Mr Green said.
"Our dedicated project team are all South Coast locals from our regional Ulladulla office and understand and support economic development in the region," Mr Green said.
"The area has been through a lot with the bushfires with some of our own team members being directly affected and then COVID, so we know all too well the importance of engaging with local trades and services where possible, and keeping the money local," he added.
We anticipate the store will open in late 2021.
- An Aldi spokesman
An Aldi spokesman said the company was "eager to progress work on our store at Merimbula".
"We anticipate the store will open in late 2021," he added.
The land at 103 and 105 - 107 Main Street, Merimbula official settled in September 2018 and came on the back of the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel's approval for the company's Development Application valued at $6.9m.
At the time Aldi said they were in the initial stages of design and hoped to commence construction in 2019.
Fairly quickly afterwards the site was cleared by Pambula company, Rankin, but then matters stalled with no sign of further work happening.
In October 2020 construction and project database Cordell Connect confirmed they had Zauner listed as the construction company for the project.
ACM understands that Rankin had the contract to clear the site with Zauner awarded the construction work.
There has been speculation over a possible difference of opinion on how the work was to transition from the site clearing phase to the building phase although none of the parties involved would comment.
For the community though there is probably just relief that work has finally started.
