At the end of February site establishment started and now, what project manager Mark Baker calls, some minor demolition, has started.
Over the next three to four weeks the old toilets and back of the stage will be removed.
These are the areas that are likely to produce the asbestos, hence the warning signs but Mr Baker said there isn't a great deal of asbestos to be removed.
He anticipates that construction work will start late March, early April.
"But you won't see much because the main construction is out the back of the hall and enclosed in the battle axe block," Mr Baker said.
It is not likely to be until mid year that the construction work will start to appear above the shops, he explained.
However there will be activity evident with cranes coming to the site and loading/unloading requiring traffic management and road closures at various times.
Mr Baker confirmed that the majority of contractors and suppliers were from the local area with "just a few from outside for specialised services" such as the internal lifts and theatrical equipment.
