The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the national mean temperature for summer was 1.88 degrees Celsius warmer than average.
The recent summer was a time when the Bega Valley experienced devastating bushfires, but no new heat records were set in Bega or Merimbula.
For last summer, the town's highest temperature was 39.6 degrees on December 28, 2019.
For Merimbula, the highest summer temperature out of 22 years of records was 44.2 degrees, which was also on January 18, 2013.
Last summer, the town's highest temperature was 34.9 degrees on December 19.
At Bermagui, measured through Montague Island, the hottest temperature was 41 degrees on January 1, 2006 out of records that go back to 1968.
Last summer, the town's hottest temperature was 29.8 degrees on December 5, 2019.
Then at Eden, measured at Green Cape, the hottest temperature was 37.2 degrees on January 8, 1969 with records that go back to 1966.
Last summer, the town's highest temperature was 27.8 degrees on December 19, 2019 and January 7, 2020.
BOM stated significant heat had affected large parts of central and southern Australia from mid-December as a slow-moving high over the Great Australian Bight allowed heat to build over the continent, with temperatures remaining elevated into the New Year period.
Last year was officially Australia's warmest and driest year on record and did set a number of weather records for Bega.
The town's lowest recorded temperature was seen on August 24, 2019 when the mercury hit just -4.7 degrees, while December 3 saw the town's lowest recorded December temperature of 1.9 degrees.
August and October both saw maximum wind gust speed records set for the town, with 98 km/h and 89 km/h.
On a positive note, rain is forecast for Tuesday to Sunday, March 3-9, and mild temperatures between 14 and 25 in Batemans Bay, Narooma, Bega and Ulladulla.
But a hazardous surf warning is in place for the Batemans Coast for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3-4.
