Dams are emptying, the Bega River is a dry sandy bed through town (on the surface) and "prayers for rain" are going unanswered for now.

According to Weatherzone, 397mm of rain fell on Bega in 2019. That's compared to the annual average of 666.2mm (1994-2017).
The December 2019 total of 2.8mm is looking like being a record low when compared with the 22-yer average of 65.3mm.
In fact, since September's official start to the bushfire danger period, Bega has only seen 66mm fall (September-December). The average for the same period recorded since 1994 is 219.4mm.
