Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews were called to the location after reports of a shed alight were made just after 11.30am.
A FRNSW spokesperson said two trucks were sent out to the site where they discovered the shed was full of potentially hazardous fertiliser.
They said police and highway patrol had been called to the scene to direct traffic and as of 12pm the fire had been brought under control.
"Fire and Rescue NSW are advising local residents to stay clear of the area around Newtown Rd until police have confirmed the area is safe," the spokesperson said.
"If you see an unattended fire please call 000."
11.45AM: A shed is currently on fire in Bega and it is reportedly full of fertiliser.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said about 11.30am on Monday, December 16, they had been alerted the 30x20metre structure and surrounding grass was on fire.
They said there was "quite a bit of fertiliser" located inside the Newtown Rd shed, which was a hazardous material so police were on the scene diverting traffic around the area.
Three Fire and Rescue trucks were at the scene.
