Far South Coast RFS spokesperson Marty Webster said strategic backburning was undertaken on Thursday night to contain the fire into a "big box".
The 4656-hectare fire was being contained by aircraft and ground crews.
Bulldozers, excavators and tree-felling machines were also being used.
He said northerly or westerly winds would carry the smoke down to Batemans Bay and south-westerly wind could carry smoke from fires near the Victorian border.
He said today's weather conditions would be challenging with a very high fire danger.
Crews would continue to work today with Saturday's conditions becoming more mild.
He said there was a Eurobodalla strike team constantly in support of Shoalhaven teams at the Currowan fire.
He asked people to call Triple 0 only if they saw a column of smoke or an actual fire.
He said there was "no active fire left" at the Nelligen fire but it was being patrolled.
