The PCYC FitForWork program has been running in major centres across the state for the past 18 months, and organisers said it's a big coup that Bega gets to host it in Term 1 2020.
It's targeted at young people who are ready to make a commitment to entering the workforce and feel school may not be the best fit. In consultation with the school, FitForWork involves a 10-12-week course, with three days a week training with classroom learning, guest speakers fitness activities and excursions, and a fourth day of work experience.
Senior Constable Sarah Bancroft said the program is open to all students "as everyone could use help to get a job". However, there are only 15 spots available.
"We'll be taking them through an interview process to make sure they're ready for the commitment and that we're willing to back them," Snr Const Bancroft said, adding that the support would continue for 12 months following the program.
"And at the end of the program we'll support them in getting a job - or if they choose to go back to school - they're not just dumped in a job and left alone.
The FitForWork program is also on the lookout for business owners to come on board as mentors and work experience options, as well as for potential trainee placements knowing they are supported by PCYC.
Applications for FitForWork need to be in prior to the end of this school term. Contact Sarah Bancroft ASAP on banc1sar@police.nsw.gov.au
