The brain child of the club with input from Shaquille Aldridge, the round will be aimed at recognising the ability and contributions of Indigenous kids to the sport of basketball.

Club president Cliff Scarlett said there were a great crop of Indigenous young players who were "massively talented" and the Sharks wanted to recognise those players and embrace Indigenous Elders and the community into the sport.

"There are Indigenous basketball teams in every state in Australia and we haven't been exposed to that down here, but we want to put it on the radar," Mr Scarlett said.

Special Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies will be held during both the Friday from 4pm and Saturday morning from 9am rounds at the Merimbula Basketball Courts.

There will also be a jumping castle and giveaways.

Bega Valley Shire Mayor Kristy McBain and her deputy will be in attendance alongside VIP guests from Basketball NSW and Yuin Nation Elders, who will hand out commemorative caps to mark the occasion featuring Indigenous designs by Mr Aldridge.

"We're still working and hoping to have some Indigenous basketball guests as well," Mr Scarlett said.

Club officials are hoping the event might even be covered on NITV, the National Indigenous Television Network.

Everyone is welcome with the games a chance to showcase skills of local players - both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

"We'd invite everyone down to see what it is all about," he said. He said basketball was a great social and sporting outlet and hoped to see more kids taking part.

The Indigenous Round will be a nice addition with the club to host the annual Merimbula Cup tournament this weekend.

Officials are eager to welcome clubs from orbost, cooma and Canberra who are coming to compete in this annual event.

Tip off is from 8am on Sunday and runs all day.

Club officials said there would be a community barbecue and full canteen running on the day with spectators very welcome to check out the competition at the Meirmbula courts.
