Basically, during such surgeries a metal cup is inserted in the pelvis's hip socket.

Another plastic cup goes inside this metal one then a metal stem is inserted into the femur which fits into the new cup.

Now Dr Krishnankutty Rajesh of Canning St performs Mako robotic-arm assisted surgeries when performing the procedure at hospital in Canberra.

"It allows for the surgery to virtually be done before the actual surgery takes place," he said.

The robot assists in the correct placement of the metal cup into the socket.

It takes out any guesswork surgeons have to do during surgery, as it uses CT scans and a computer program to plan out precise details such as the correct size, depth and angle the cup needs.

During the surgery it locks the cup in.

"It doesn't do the surgery, it just assist you in doing it," Dr Rajesh said.
