However, it's a story that continues to resonate through the generations - especially given the growing clan of descendants.
On Anzac Day and Remembrance Day each year, descendants of Henry "Pop" Lucas gather at the Bega War Memorial Gate to pay their respects to the family's extraordinary record of service.
All nine of Pop's sons are recognised on the Bega War Memorial - Henry Jnr, Lance, Bill, Rufus, Ronald, Dudley, Cecil, Joseph, and Basil, alongside comrades from around the Bega Valley.
It is understood this is the only group of nine brothers who enlisted to serve in the one conflict anywhere in the British Empire, or the British Commonwealth as we know it today.
On Anzac Day 2019, alongside his father Dan and grandfather Nelson, was a great-great-grandson of Pop, Brock Lucas.
He joined what the family members said was the largest gathering of the relations yet.
"Anzac Day has always been a big thing for us," Brock said following the Bega dawn service.
"It's a good feeling to be here with everyone. It's respectful. It's good to pay our respects to all the boys."
While many veterans and their families headed to Club Bega for a gunfire breakfast after the dawn service, Brock and the large Lucas clan made their way over to the memorial in Pop's honour that sits in the rose garden outside Bega Civic Centre.
There they laid flowers, gathered for photos, and cracked a few drinks in honour of their family heritage.
Lest we forget.
