Justice Minister Michael Keenan says if early reports a Russian passenger jet crashed over Egypt due to a bomb planted by Islamic State are true it will confirm the group is "vicious and barbaric".

CNN, citing an unnamed intelligence official, reported on Thursday that United States intelligence now believed the plane was brought down by a bomb planted by the terrorist group.
Mr Keenan told the ABC's Radio National on Thursday the government could not yet confirm if the reports were accurate but it would be "monitoring the situation on a regular basis".
He also confirmed no Australian airlines flew out of Sharm el-Sheikh after the British government announced it would suspend flights from the resort city.
"If there is updated advice that we need to provide to the Australian people then obviously we would do that," he said, before adding that Australia's own airports were "very secure".
"If you're travelling in Australia you're travelling in one of the most secure environments in the world," he said.
"People should have every confidence travelling on Australian airliners that they are safe when they do so."
A spokeswoman from the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was continuing to ask Australians to "reconsider the need to travel" in Egypt.
"The Department is aware of UK advice to airlines on requirement for additional security measures for flights from Sharm el Sheikh to the UK," the spokeswoman said.
"No Australian airlines fly out of Sharm el Sheikh. We keep the travel advice for Egypt under close review. For some time, the Department has been warning Australians to 'reconsider their need to travel' (level 3 of 4) to Sharm el Sheikh due to the threat of terrorist attack and kidnapping – this level remains in place."
