Over the last decade, YESS has recruited and trained over 150 volunteers to tutor local children at Bermagui, Cobargo, Narooma, Tilba, Quaama and Bega Public Schools as well as Narooma and Bega High Schools.
Working in close collaboration with the schools’ learning support staff and principals, YESS tutors use Macquarie University’s Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy (MULTILit) program to achieve outstanding results.
Teachers report the program's many graduates participate more fully in classroom learning, have improved self-esteem and lifetime educational and well-being prospects.
The volunteer tutors’ dedication and skills and schools’ vision and commitment are the major reasons for the program’s success. YESS tutors report they find tutoring a very rewarding experience.
The NSW Education Department provides new MULTILit tutors a one day training course. The next training day is at Cobargo Public School on Wednesday, February 27.
Each YESS volunteer typically tutors students one-on-one from 9.30-11am, one day a week during term.
Experienced YESS tutors support new volunteers in each school and back-up tutors are available if volunteers wish to take holidays or days off.
YESS tutors include retirees, grandparents, parents, former teachers, and other interested community members. They need no teaching experience, just a desire to help local children succeed.
