Bega Valley Shire Council staff began digging a channel at 7.30am, Friday, February 8.
A dangerous channel and deep water warning has been issued by council advising the public to stay clear of the area for 48 hours.
Urban maintenance coordinator Cliff Shipton said Back Lake had reached its trigger level after the recent rain events and its opening was necessary.
“It has reached its trigger level of 1.4 metres, which has given us the go-ahead to relieve the pressure and empty the lake,” he said.
“We are waiting for high tide now which is about 11.30am where we will break the plug at the end and let it go.”
Sand collapsing and dirty water is also a risk and the public are advised to remain behind council’s safety fencing.
Bega River was also opened on Tuesday, February 5.
