On Wednesday afternoon, January 16, the iconic Imlay St business was a shadow of its former self.
The phone rings out, all cars have been removed from the lot, and doors to the now-empty saleroom are locked tight.
On its website, Eden Motor Group said that since taking over the business in 2013, it had grown to a workplace employing 30 people “to become one of the largest employers on the Sapphire Coast and Bega Valley”.
It has also been the local authorised agency for NRMA services.
It’s unknown at this stage how the employees of Eden Motor Group will be affected longer term.
Owner of the property Eden Motor Group operates from Alan Fraser took to social media to reassure the community action was being taken to assist affected customers and hopefully get the doors reopened.
“It is indeed sad to see a local business close,” Mr Fraser wrote on The Eden Voice Facebook page.
“I am working with NRMA and others to ensure that we get the doors open as soon as possible to provide assistance to the many policy holders in our district so that people will not have to travel to do something as simple as renewing their insurance.
“I am in contact with the staff to provide assistance to protect their entitlements and wish to thank everyone for their concern for the staff. Hopefully all will be resolved as soon as possible.”
Eden local Anna McCamish expressed how sad it was ”to see an iconic Eden business close down”.
“You're a great bloke Alan – wishing everyone the best for the future,” she wrote among other messages of support on social media.
“I remember running around the workshop as a kid – all my family has worked there in the past except myself.
“It must be sad for the Fraser family to see their legacy close down. I wish Con [Zurcas] and all those involved with the business all the best and I hope they can all find work elsewhere.”
According to the ASIC database, the business is jointly owned by Vanern Holdings and TCB Family Trust, and operates under the banners Eden Motor Group, Eden Toyota, Conrad Ford Eden, Eden Suzuki and Fraser Motors.
Both Alan Fraser and Con Zurcas were unavailable for comment by the time of publishing. The Magnet will endeavour to clarify more details as they come to hand.
