After the Old Bega Hospital missed out on a $2.4million grant from the NSW government’s Regional Cultural Fund to begin restoration of the building, Val Little decided to start a call-to-arms to knit enough to cover the building’s roof. The roof burnt down in 2004.
Ms Little, who is the secretary of the fundraising committee for the Friends of the Old Bega Hospital, was “frustrated” the historic building missed out on the grant as it was “shovel ready”.
“We’re calling on your fingers and your needles to do the talking,” she said.
“We’re all aware the money isn’t endless, we understand that. But we do think Bega has waited long enough.”
Everyone is invited to come along to help knit at the stall outside SportsPower on Carp St, Bega from 10am-12.30pm starting on Thursday, January 17 and running each Thursday for the next four weeks.
Bring a seat, but wool and needles will be available. Crochet and weaving is welcome.
Ms Little also plans to talk to people about how the submission to the Regional Cultural Fund was not accepted.
