As we begin the countdown to the end of 2018, my fellow councillors and I have had the honour of attending and presenting awards at our region’s local schools.

I’m continually impressed by the many achievements of today’s youth and the outstanding way they represent their schools, a true reflection of our exceptional local teaching community.
I was delighted to once again join Member for Monaro John Barilaro last Tuesday as a number of successful grant funding applications were announced for projects in our region.
A project to upgrade Cooma Creek has been allocated $473,897.
The project will see the installation of five additional seats along the path that follows the creek, brand new solar lights at 30-metre intervals along the path, an upgrade to the path itself, and work to tidy up the creek.
In addition to this our region has received a $360,000 boost, which is set to benefit cycling enthusiasts of all ages, with Member for Monaro John Barilaro, announcing that the NSW Government will fund two major cycling and riding projects in the region.
With funding for a $210,000 Learn to Ride Bike Path to teach our youngest kids the ins and outs of road safety while they learn to ride.
Additionally, our big kids and adults will not miss out, with the announcement of $150,000 for further works at the Mt Gladstone Shared Trail to finish off the 16km trail network.
Thanks to the continued support from the community, council, and the NSW Government, the Snowy Monaro region is fast becoming a destination for cyclists and mountain biking enthusiasts, so as well as providing great facilities for locals, these additional funds will boost the activities we are able to showcase to our tourism market.
Last Friday council was pleased to once again partner with local community organisations to celebrate International Day of People with Disability, with the Celebrate Ability Festival held in Centennial Park.
The event featured live entertainment, a wheelchair basketball demonstration by Darren Skuse and members of the Canberra Chargers / ACT Wheelchair Basketball, guided all-abilities stretching activities facilitated by LNH Physiotherapy, a demonstration by the Cooma Bocce Club, and the 2018 Celebrate Ability art exhibition.
Congratulations to all the 2018 Celebrate Ability Awards recipients, event organisers and sponsors.
Don’t miss out on your chance to nominate a local hero in one of this year’s Australia Day Award categories. Head to Council’s website for more information.
