Batemans Bay police say a call was received at approximately 4am. They said a white Kenworth truck towing a car-carrier trailer was travelling north on the Princes Highway. It was unable to avoid a tree which had fallen across the road near Whittakers Creek bridge. After striking the tree, the truck hit the eastern guard rail and came to rest in the creek. Police said the 40-year-old male driver from Bega was conscious and breathing, with a sore leg, but did not sustain serious injuries. Police said the truck and trailer had been towed after the tree was removed, and that the incident had become a clean up job for Hazmat crews, due to diesel leaking from the ruptured fuel tank into the creek, which feeds into a marine sanctuary.
9.31am: A Canberra Hospital spokesperson said the Emergency Department had not admitted anyone who was involved in a motor vehicle accident overnight.
9.22am: NSW Ambulance said they were called to an incident at Whittakers Creek at 4.06am. The spokesperson said a 40-year-old male was conscious and breathing, but refused medical attention. The spokesperson said it appeared a truck had hit a guard rail and careered into scrub.
A Moruya Fire and Rescue spokesperson said crews were still at the scene cleaning up, and diesel had spilt into the creek. The spokesperson said the south-bound lane was blocked and a contra-flow was in place.
Narooma Fire and Rescue also attended.
Clarification
Initial emergency services statements on Thursday morning suggested the crash occurred at 2.15am and involved a track and a car. However, it is understood this report referred to an incident the previous afternoon on the Princes Highway south of Narooma, near Costin St, when a person was trapped for about 30 minutes after a crash involving a truck and a car. Emergency crews were called at 2.20pm on Wednesday, November 7.
