All day market stalls, guided walking tours, as well as a host of live music, including local favourites Pete Wild and Robyn Martin, will keep the whole family occupied and entertained.
The initiative of Bega River and Wetlands Landcare (BRAWL) will have lots of activities for all ages and abilities such as kid’s eco-activities, community tree planting, kite flying and education on the river system and its inhabitants.
A highlight of the event will be the official unveiling of a series of interpretive signs for the Bega River Walungari Trail, a name developed in consultation with the local Aboriginal community to feature the Djiringanj word for downstream.
Since the inaugural River Day in 2015, BRAWL’s small group of volunteers have continued to plant, weed, battle bamboo and plan for the next stages of pathway and bush rehabilitation across a number of sites in the Bega River Reserve.
“We’re proud of how the area is transformed from when we first started back in 2007 and we know how valued and used it is by the community, but there is still more work to do,” BRAWL chair, Chris Allen said
“So the idea of River Day is to acknowledge and enjoy what we’ve achieved so far and hopefully get more support for the future.”
Those achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the active support of South East Local Land Services, Bega Valley Shire Council, Far South Coast Landcare Association and the Koori crew as well as other local groups, schools and a team of local environmental contractors.
River Day is a free, fun family day where everyone is encouraged to meander along the growing network of paths and trails around the Bega River Reserve.
You can drive, ride or walk to River Day. Wander along the banks with a picnic – or delicious refreshments will be for sale on site. Well behaved dogs are welcome, don’t forget to bring your hat and your brolly, just in case.
