The first round is being hosted by Bombala this Saturday, November 3, at 2pm.
The newly formed competition will be played in three divisions – Under 14s, Under 17 and Open Ladies.
The Under 14s competition will see teams entered from Merimbula-Pambula, Narooma, Bombala, Cooma and Bega. In Under 17s Bombala, Narooma, Bega and Cooma; and in the Open Ladies Candelo-Bemboka United, Tathra, Bega and Narooma Clubs will field teams.
The competition will be played over three weeks hosted by Bombala, Narooma and Bega with the fourth week finals at a venue to be announced.
“This is an exciting time for the development of Women's Rugby League in Group 16,” Group 16 president Allan Wilton said.
“Female participation continues to grow at a rapid rate with recent participation statistics showing a 28 per cent increase in female participation across Country Rugby League.
“The shorter version 9s tackle concept is a perfect way for new players and clubs to be involved and introduced to the game.”
The inaugural Group 16 Women's 9s is one of eight new women's competitions being introduced across Country Rugby League areas this November.
“Women's Rugby League will continue on its rapid upwards growth and there is no doubt people will look back at the nines format as one of the building blokes to the continued success of women's involvement in the game,” Wilton said.
“As can be seen by the number of clubs entering teams in the newly formed competition there has been a fantastic response to the concept.
“These competitions will be the commencement of an opportunity for creating pathways for our talented local players to hopefully advance and develop into future representative players.
“Speaking with the players, coaches and clubs and they are all exciting about this weeks first round of competition at Bombala.”
