The Jonas St fire has been downgraded to Advice level and is now being reported as being controlled.
EARLIER:
An out of control bushfire started east of Bombala on Saturday, September 15.
As of 2pm, the fire was burning near Jonas St, Bombala and was moving in a south easterly direction.
Firefighters were working to protect properties at Market St and Cathcart St.
The Rural Fire Service, which categorised the fire under a watch and act alert level, stated a south westerly change was expected across the fire ground on Saturday afternoon which would see the fire moving in a north westerly direction towards the Coolumbooka Weir.
The RFS said the fire was burning under very strong winds and under these conditions, fires could be difficult to control.
Embers may be blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires. These spot fires can threaten homes earlier than the predicted main fire front.
RFS’s advice
- Put your bushfire survival plan into action. If you do not have bushfire survival plan, know what you will do if the fire threatens your property;
- Well prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety during the fire; and
- Follow the advice of firefighters on the ground.
