Playing in cool conditions with icy southerly winds howling up the ground, the Tathra United outfit went down to the Devils 4-2 to miss the grand finals this weekend.
Tathra made a good start with Marley McCabe scoring from an expertly taken free kick from distance which cleared the Bega keeper and gave Tathra a 1-0 lead. However, soon afterwards, Bega Red equalized when Jim Campbell scored from a free kick from just outside the penalty area. Playing with a wind advantage, the Bega team then scored twice from open play to take a 3-1 lead at half-time.
In the second half, Bega Red scored again to lead 4-1, before Tathra hit back when a thunderous shot from McCabe that rebounded off the cross-bar to Taj Constable, who passed to Alex Mozina who scored to make it 4-2 and give Tathra hope of a come-back. However, with only ten minutes remaining, the task was a hard one. Although Tathra created several more chances and held firm at the back, they were unable to score again to finish their season.
“I’m very proud of how they played today and for the season; they are always looking to improve their game,” coach Sam Constable said
“The team communicated and passed well, and never gave up trying to hit the back of the net. I’m looking forward to working with them again next year.”
Tathra’s under 12s will contend the grand final when they take on Bega at 10am.
