It was a nail-biting contest in the Under 14s major semi-final between the Bega Roosters and Narooma Devils.
The Roosters surged in the second half to recovered from an 18-point deficit to win 24-22 over the Devils.
Coach Peter Wheatley said it was a “gutsy win” for the team and he “very proud of their performance and attitude”.
Centres Bailey Caldwell and Logan Reeve were at their best for Bega while prop Dylan Campbell showed strength in attack and defence.
Captain Matt Wheatley was a standout, scoring three tries.
Bega will now have a weekend of rest before their grand final clash on September 8 – against the Devils or Bay Tigers with that to be decided this Saturday.
Other major semi results went against the Roosters, but the club will get a second chance in the preliminary final at Batemans Bay this weekend. .
The Roosters Under 16s couldn’t overcome a tough Narooma Devils side in their major semi on Saturday going down 30 points to 18. They are now looking for a very strong performance in order to overcome the Batemans Bay Tigers on the Bay’s home ground this Saturday.
Although Bega’s Under 12s looked against the minor premier Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs, but the Bulldogs snatched a six-point victory 18-12. A last minute effort by the young Roosters saw a try disallowed on the fulltime buzzer. Bega will now go into their elimination final against Narooma Devils.
Coach Norm Griffin will once again look to his forward pack, led by hard runner Travis Sommerville and the hard hitting Braedy Armstrong and Tyler Ellard, complimented by Sam Griffin and Will Gray-Balcomb.
The Bombala Blue Heelers claimed an upset in the internation league-tag, taking down the undefeated Chicks 20-10.
Struggling to contain the Heelers, the Chicks were down 16-0 at the break, but fought back with tries to Madison Lucas-Wilton and Alanna Dummett early in the second half.
The Bega girls will now need to focus on their elimination final this Saturday against the Narooma Devils.
Meanwhile, the Bega mod league-tag girls kept their chances alive with a 36-0 win over Tathra in the minor semi-final draw.
Shakira Dummett was a standout for Bega scoring 3 tries, Summer Norris 2 tries and Maddie Cullen, Emerson Armstrong and Payten Collins 1 try each while goal kickers Scarlett Norris and Lydia Weber converted one try each.
Bega will now face Bombala in the prelim and coach Melinda Armstrong believes by having strength across the field and closing holes in their defence, Bega should come close to securing a grand final appearance.
