Munch and Move provides training, resources and local support for early childhood education and care services on healthy eating and active play.
One of the pilot training sessions was held on Bega in August 2008. Since then, the program has scaled up across the state and is a key component of the premier's priority for tackling childhood obesity.
Special awards were presented to Anne Maree Carroll of Bega Preschool, Narelle Myers of Bermagui Preschool, Michelle Vandermey of Bega Valley Shire Council Children's Services and Jane Courtney of Tathra Preschool. They were congratulated for their participation and involvement in program, and for becoming advocates for children's health and wellbeing.
“Rates of childhood obesity are around one in five, but programs such as this are helping to buck the trend,” a NSW Health spokeswoman said.
“Early education services in the Bega Valley are helping our children form a lifetime of healthy habits.”
A special mention was also given to Martine Mathieson of Eden Community Health Centre who has supported the services over the past ten years.
“Martine is passionate about improving health in the Bega Valley and her longstanding relationship with the services has helped them progress their practice,” the spokeswoman said.
