On Friday, about 250 children from the two schools participated in a variety of activities teaching them about the rich culture of Australia’s traditional owners.
Yuin women Saphron Scott, 20, and Sienna Scott, 13, were teaching children how to weave headbands on the day.
They both liked the theme this year – “Because of her we can” – and said NAIDOC Week was an important time.
“It’s just means coming together to celebrate our culture,” Sienna said.
Aboriginal liaison officer at St Patrick’s School Emma Grant said other activities on the day included traditional games, dancing, making Johnny cakes, as well as a film screening.
She said she hoped NAIDOC Week would build more of a cultural awareness in the children at school.
