CEO of PCYC Dominic Teakle accepted the check on Thursday while visiting Bega with state commander of NSW Police youth command Superintendent David Roptell as part of their tour around NSW visiting all PCYC groups and seeing how they were operating.
Mr Teakle said his organisation needed to look at what it was doing in the Bega community and what could be improved.
“I think there is a real need for a PCYC service here,” he said.
“It’s about providing the outreach services in a proactive, beneficial way while we seek to transition to a traditional program.”
He said if there was a fixed premises for the PCYC in the Bega region outreach programs could be run from there.
Club manager for PCYC Far South Coast Jason Hough said they were currently developing a business plan in consultation with Bega Valley Shire Council, Rotary groups, police, youths and others to see what model would work best in the region.
“We are hoping to get a building for the PCYC in Bega,” he said.
The Far South Coast PCYC covers the region from Batemans Bay to the Victorian border and because all the towns in between – such as Bega, Merimbula, Pambula and Eden – are separated outreach programs have to be run in each of them.
Mr Hough said it would be great to have a building for the PCYC in the region, but it would also be very useful to have a bus in order to take youths from around the shire to different events.
