WIRES Far South East member Janine Green, was called out to provide special assistance for the first native animal burn victim from the Tathra fires. Ms Green had to obtain special police permission on Tuesday, March 20, to enter a section of Tathra that had not been declared safe, at that stage.

Ms Green’s request to visit the area followed information from a Bega Valley Shire Council worker who noticed an eastern grey kangaroo joey in severe distress with major burns on her paws.
Now named Ashleigh, the joey is still in Ms Green’s care following a trip to Merimbula Vets. There she was given pain medication and antibiotics to stop infection. Ashleigh had burn cream applied and her two hind legs had to be bandaged.
If you would like to help WIRES FSE as a carer, there is a Rescue and Immediate Care Course on May 19. Anyone interested should go to www.wires.org.au to do the online part of the course first.
